THE MARRIAGE COVENANT

The Marriage Covenant
The marriage covenant is a special union created by God to unite two people to become one flesh. In the bible, when the Pharisees came and asked Jesus, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” (See Matthew 19:3), Jesus responded to the question with, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” (See Matthew 19:4-6)

In addition, the Pharisees also asked Jesus, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?” (See Matthew 19:7). And, Jesus responded with, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.” (See Matthew 19:8-9)

Therefore, the marriage covenant is meant to be loving and honorable. It is meant to allow the husband and wife to build a special connection and bond that lasts throughout their lifetime, and unless separated by God, or separated through divorce because of sexual immorality. The bible encourages those in marriage to be kind to each other. According to Hebrews 13:4, “Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.” So clearly, cheating is unacceptable with God.

And, God is so kind to also share with us in the bible about the marriage between Jesus and the believers or saints. In Revelation 19:6-9, Apostle John recorded the vision that he saw in heaven, saying, And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns! Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’” And he said to me, “These are the true sayings of God.””

Therefore, the marriage covenant is a very important and a special union filled with deep meaning and significant attributes. When God unites two people in the marriage covenant, it is meant to be honored, celebrated, and accepted by all. Be blessed always. Live your best life with God, and live inspired.
