God is love, and love is perfection. When asked about the greatest commandment in the law, Jesus responded with the two great commandments about love, and by those two great commandments, He said the whole law and the prophets hang on them. Specifically, Jesus said; “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets” (See Matthew 22:37-40). That is it. Jesus gave us the formula for love, the formula to know God and to know ourselves.
There is great importance in knowing true love – the love of God for us, our love for God, and the love for our neighbor as for ourselves. Many people are familiar with the bible verse from John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Here, the love of God is so clearly expressed and shown to us, in that God loved us so much that He was willing to send His only begotten Son in whom He loves so dearly, to come to earth in order to die as a sacrifice for the sinful and fallen mankind. He came to save us because of love. He went through the whole experience of the cross because of love. He loved us so much that to Him, it was all worth the price. The price to save mankind from eternal damnation, and the price to give mankind eternal life with untold treasures and riches in glory.
God’s love is so clearly shown that there is really no plausible reason to doubt it. Once you know the love of God for you, it is important to learn to grow in the love of God. This is the highest relationship there is – knowing the love of God, and growing in the love of God. Learn to love God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. And learn to love your neighbor as yourself. It is in the exercise of loving God and loving our neighbors as ourselves that we truly experience and know true love. The perfect love. The pure love. The love that is above sin. God promised us in Jeremiah 29:13, saying, “And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” God’s love is already there for us, but something happens when we begin to love God and when we seek and search for God with all our heart. Something amazing starts to happen. It is so amazing that there are no words to really describe it. You just need to experience it for yourself.
